ETC Laboratory – Onboarding & Commitment

I. Lab Philosophy

II. Member Commitments
- Two-semester minimum (~100 hours/semester; 6–8 hrs/week) for for-credit student roles; staff commitments as agreed
- Availability for weekday afternoons/evenings; occasional weekends during testing
- Attend required trainings & meetings (FLAM, ABS, Focus Area as applicable)
- Complete IRB (CITI CORE), CPR/AED/First Aid within 7 days of onboarding (or attest EMT)
- Maintain confidentiality; communicate professionally; take initiative
- Practice open science and ethical data handling; accurate collection & honest reporting
- Use CRediT taxonomy for proper attribution of contributions
- Respond to lab emails within 24 hours

III. Lab Policies
Communication
- Primary comms via email (24-hour response expectation)
- Urgent items via GroupMe/text (lab only); the Remind app is for participant messaging only
- Submit materials for review at least 24 hours in advance
- Participant email rule: use only
etcresearch@illinois.eduor a study-specific alias (e.g.,heatwaves@illinois.edu). Do not cc Dr. Mullen on participant emails. Adverse events only: BCCspmullen@illinois.eduand emailetc-postmortem-group@office365.illinois.edu.
Authorship & Credit
- Track contributions using the CRediT taxonomy
- Discuss authorship early; recognition based on substantial intellectual contribution
Safety & Compliance
- Report safety concerns/incidents immediately
- Maintain current certifications throughout participation
- Follow all lab safety protocols and emergency procedures
Work–Life Balance
- Typical lab hours: Mon–Fri (3–9 pm), with weekend flexibility during critical testing
- Maintain personal well-being and communicate scheduling conflicts
- Respect others’ boundaries and scheduled breaks

- CPR / AED / First Aid (ICPRI) — online accepted; EMT license satisfies CPR/AED/First Aid
- HIPAA Training (REDCap module)
- Good Clinical Practice (GCP) – Social & Behavioral

How to Save & Submit Your Form
1) When all sections show a ✔ and your info is filled, click Save as PDF below to open the print dialog.
2) Choose Destination/Printer → Save as PDF (Mac: ⌘ + P; Windows: Ctrl + P → “Microsoft Print to PDF”).
3) Save with the suggested name: LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_ETC_Onboarding_YYYY-MM-DD.pdf.
4) Click Open Email Draft to create an email to spmullen@illinois.edu (Cc: etcresearch@illinois.edu) and attach your saved PDF.
